Blood Mystery Solved: Two New Blood Types Identified

You probably know your blood type: A, B, AB or O. You may even know if you're Rhesus positive or negative. But how about the Langereis blood type? Or the Junior blood type? Positive or negative? Most people have never even heard of these.

Yet this knowledge could be "a matter of life and death," saysUniversity of Vermont biologistBryan Ballif.

While blood transfusion problems due to Langereis and Junior blood types are rare worldwide, several ethnic populations are at risk, Ballif notes. "More than 50,000 Japanese are thought to be Junior negative and may encounter blood transfusion problems or mother-fetus incompatibility," he writes.

But the molecular basis of these two blood types has remained a mystery -- until now.

In the February issue of Nature Genetics, Ballif and his colleagues report on their discovery of two proteins on red blood cells responsible for these lesser-known blood types.

Ballif identified the two molecules as specialized transport proteins named ABCB6 and ABCG2.

"Only 30 proteins have previously been identified as responsible for a basic blood type," Ballif notes, "but the count now reaches 32."

The last new blood group proteins to be discovered were nearly a decade ago, Ballif says, "so it's pretty remarkable to have two identified this year."

Both of the newly identified proteins are also associated with anticancer drug resistance, so the findings may also have implications for improved treatment of breast and other cancers.

As part of the international effort, Ballif, assistant professor in the biology department, used a mass spectrometer at UVM funded by the Vermont Genetics Network. With this machine, he analyzed proteins purified by his longtime collaborator, Lionel Arnaud at the French National Institute for Blood Transfusion in Paris, France.

Ballif and Arnaud, in turn, relied on antibodies to Langereis and Junior blood antigens developed by Yoshihiko Tani at the Japanese Red Cross Osaka Blood Center and Toru Miyasaki at the Japanese Red Cross Hokkaido Blood Center.

Aakash vs BSNL's tablet

Last year, DataWind in association with the Government of India came out with a 7 inch Android tablet for students. Named Aakash, the tablet costs Rs 2,999 in the market; while its subsidised rate is just Rs 2,250.

Aakash, which was hailed as the cheapest tablet in the world, was projected as revolutionary and was talked about the world over. In fact, its makers got lakhs of preorders.

Before the euphoria could die down, though, public sector telecom operator BSNL has come out with an extremely low cost tablet of its own. Manufactured by Noida based Pantel Technologies, the Penta IS701R tablet has WiFi and is priced at Rs 3,499.

Now we have two tablets in the same category - at around Rs 3,000. Here we try to compare the Aakash and BSNL tablets in terms of availability, price, specifications and value additions.

DataWind, the Canadian company that is manufacturing Aakash, on a previous occasion failed to honour its commitment to make the tablet available in retail stores by the end of November last year. Now the company has said that Aakash will be available in stores by March, but there has been a lot of flip flop on DataWind's side.

Aakash tablet was initially to be made available only to students through colleges and schools. However, the company then started taking online orders for the tablet from everyone, including students. Besides, DataWind has given only 10,000 Aakash tablets to the government for distribution in schools and colleges of the one lakh initially proposed.

JODI BREAKERS aims for a healthy weekend

Joginder Tuteja, Glamsham Editorial
It's less than a week remaining for the release of JODI BREAKERS and its makers are expectedly going through nervous times. While the film's lead pair Madhavan and Bipasha Basu is occupied with their multi city tours, the film's producers as well as director Ashwini Chaudhary have their calculators out to gauge the kind of response that the film would now fetch at the box office.
"The economics of making and then releasing a film have changed. Also, with Madhavan pulling off TANU WEDS MANU quite well as a solo lead, there are added expectations from JODI BREAKERS to do well too. We are looking at the opening weekend to be quite healthy because let's admit it, regardless of how good our film may, it would be the first weekend that would be quite important. We are not losing sight of that and are definitely aiming for healthy footfalls in the first three days," says a high placed official from the film's production house.
Moreover since the film is releasing alongside TERE NAAL LOVE HO GAYA, it would be all the more important for both these rom-coms to make as much moolah as possible in the first few days after which it would be the eventual product that would do the talking.
"Well, in that context I am not overtly bothered," says Ashwini and adds, "As it is always said, the weekend belongs to the producer while it's the director who is responsible for the weekdays. As long as producers make their money in the first three days and audience accepts my film with open arms in weekdays to follow, I don't mind."
He is quite confident about that happening though. "As a director you always know whether a film is good or bad. Post that once you are a part of the promotion, you further get to know if it would reach out to audience or not. When I made GOOD BOY BAD BOY I knew it won't work. Same was the case with DHOOP as well. Former was a badly made film while latter was poorly promoted. Thankfully none of this is a case with JODI BREAKERS due to which I am quite confident and happy about it."
Here is hoping that audience too gets to say the same.

Vidya's KAHAANI to be adapted into a novel

Glamsham Editorial
It's the day and age where films are made inspired by novels. But this time around, Viacom 18's suspense thriller KAHAANI is soon to be adapted into a novel.
Advaita Kala, who has penned the script of the film, is soon planning on writing a novel on the same story line, but with a twist and is soon to see its launch at the end of this year.
Says director Sujoy Ghosh, "Advaita is penning the story. She is going to write it a bit differently and it won't be like the film. So that will be something interesting to wait and watch out for. Advaita's thought process is totally different, which is good."
KAHAANI tells the tale of Vidya Bagchi who arrives from London in search of her missing husband. Seven months pregnant and alone in a festive city, with nothing to rely on except fragments from her memories about him, Vidya is determined to unravel the truth about her husband - for herself and her unborn child.
Directed by Sujoy Ghosh, Viacom 18's KAHAANI comes to a theatre near you on 9th March 2012.

The Big Question: Should the govt. bail out Kingfisher Airlines?

Vijay Mallya, the chairman of the UB Group and promoter of languishing airline Kingfisher Airlines (KFA) says that his airline won’t shut down as it is against national interest. Countering media reports, he further stated that what he’s looking for is not a bailout from the government but an infusion of capital from a consortium of banks. The cash-strapped KFA has been staring at the abyss with a series of events including canceled flights, pilots quitting en masse and repeated flight delays. Mallya wants KFA’s bank accounts unfrozen (this, after the company failed to pay income tax dues), allow foreign institutions invest in domestic airlines and import of aviation fuel.

Considering KFA is falling apart due to severe financial duress should the banks or the government bail out the struggling airline? Share your opinion in the comments section below.

Shiva Ratri special

Om, the waves whisper as we walk down the seashore. As they ebb and flow, they form the Om symbol on the beach, a legend that explains why the beach is so named. A few foreign tourists look out from the shacks as the silence is interrupted by birds. The salts of the sea tickle your nostrils and the breeze lifts your spirits.

The breeze brings us to two ancient temple towns – Murudeshwar and Gokarna – where myth and legend flow with the waves. There is an air of sanctity as the temple towns resonate with the  legends of Shiva. The eyes feast on blue-green waters as rivers alternate with seas. Set amidst beautiful beaches, these tales are told by gods and demons, lending the towns with history and identity. The sea and mountains here have witnessed a tale set in ancient times – a story about good, evil and a weapon called power.
